Edinburgh Ski Touring Club Participation Statement
Everyone participating in club activities must be aware of the hazards and risks associated with skiing, ski touring and mountaineering. You must accept these risks and ensure that you maintain appropriate and adequate insurance cover for the activities you are undertaking.
Mountaineering Scotland Liability Insurance
Edinburgh Ski Touring Club is affiliated to Mountaineering Scotland. All members of Edinburgh Ski Touring Club with a UK or Republic of Ireland address benefit from the Mountaineering Scotland combined liability insurance. Detailed information on this insurance, what’s covered and what’s not covered is available here:
Importantly:
Please do not assume that your household insurance will cover your skiing accidents.
The Mountaineering Scotland liability insurance does not provide personal injury cover. It is not a travel policy either and does not cover search & rescue, repatriation or medical costs.
It is your responsibility to arrange the appropriate insurance cover required for the activities you are undertaking. And, yes, you really do need to read the small print!
For example, while travel insurance policies do cover personal liability, both British Mountaineering Council (BMC) and Snowcard insurance policies contain clauses excluding cover for liability to travelling companions. This means that member-to-member liability on club meets is excluded. As another example, the Austrian Alpine Club Worldwide Rescue and Repatriation Service limits medical treatment costs abroad to €10,000. On its own, this would be inadequate, but might work in combination with an EHIC or GHIC. You can also increase the medical cover provided by purchasing an additional policy with their insurer.
