Huts, bothies and bunkhouses

Bunkhouse stype accomodation

There are three primary sources of addresses for bunkhouse style accommodation.

1. Independent Backpacker Hostels have good web site as well as printed directories.

http://www.hostel-scotland.co.uk/index.asp

http://www.highland-hostels.co.uk/

2. The SYHA also offer a range of hostels for individual and group use. The Club maintains a membership, mainly as emergency cover for bad weather. The SYHA is actively promoting a RentalHostel scheme, where groups can book a whole hostel .

3. The MCoS publication:

Scottish Clubs' Huts

This contains a list of huts where MCofS members may be able to book individually or as a Club group. Copies can be obtained for £1.50 from MCofS but requests need to be on headed Club notepaper.

The Mountain Bothies Association maintains a number of bothies, mainly for private owners, these are available to anyone who is travelling independently across country. They are not meant for use by groups or for Club meets. The ease of obtaining a list of locations varies overtime, but the picture arhives on the web site provide one wasy of locating some at least of the bothies. Anyone interested in supporting the Mountain Bothies Association and using their facilities should contact the Secretary:
Mr Ted Butcher, MBA Information Secretary, 26 Rycroft Avenue, Deeping St James, Peterborough PE6 8NT 01788 345062

A new Cairngorm bothy notice board is to be found at

Camping

Camping at organised campsite can provide access to comparable facilities to many bunkhouses, a good starting point, providing lists by region is:

Bed and breakfast and other accommodation

Alternatively you can try the regional tourist sites for lists of all types of accommodation. Bed and Breakfast is often little more expensive than hostel accommodation.
