We have good quality skis and boots available for hire at very reasonable prices. This year, in addition to our Telemark and Nordic equipment, we have bought some brand new Alpine touring kit, and hope this will be of interest to members to try out in the mountains.
Our ski hire co-ordinator Helen will handle bookings for winter 2009-2010. The pick-up and return time is usually Wednesday evenings, and MUST be pre-booked with Helen, giving as much notice as possible as information will be passed to the rota volunteers manning the garage on that week. The garage will only be manned if bookings have been made, so please don't just turn up on spec!
The easiest way to book is to copy the following template into an email and send it to Helen.

All our Telemark skis have 7TM bindings, except where noted below. Most are suitable for both piste and backcountry touring, depending on individual preference.
In the small range: we have 3 pairs of Atomic MX (2 x 161cm and 1 x 153cm) and 1 pair of Hagan TX-B with Chilli bindings (160cm).
In the medium range: we have two pairs of Head 170cm skis and 1 pair of Black Diamond Mystics at 167cm. Also at 170cm we have a pair of Atomic MX7 skis.
For the club giants: we have 1 pair of Hagan Tour length 177cm and 1 pair of Tua Helium skis at 180cm.
Our new Alpine touring skis all have Fritschi Eagle bindings, which come with brakes. We have a pair of Hagan Spirits at 150cm (fits up to a boot size 27 / UK size 8), a pair of K2 Choguris (167cm) and Hagan Alpine Carve (170cm).

We
have five pairs of Atomic
Sierra skis, in 170, 180 and 190 lengths. These skis are touring skis
with a reasonable degree of waist which helps to promote turning when
edged and for control on the downhill slopes. They are the ideal skis
for beginners.
They have fishscale bottoms, which means there is no need to explore the arcane mysteries of waxing until later. They have Rottefella Riva cable bindings which provide greater rigidity than the older three pin bindings and are extremely user friendly. They are perfect for most gentle undulating touring in Scotland and Norway.
We also have 2 longer pairs of Nordic skis: Fischer Outabound Crown (fishscale with Chilli bindings (179cm) and Atomic Tourcap (no fishscale) with Voile release bindings (180cm).
As a guide, the skis of length
170 should suit people under 140lbs or 65 kgs.
The club has 16 pairs of plastic boots for use with the Telemark and Nordic skis. Five pairs are Garmont Telesaurus Boots in 25.5, 26 and 26.5. These cover sizes 38-40 or 5-7+ in other common measurement systems. They are relatively soft and low cut and a very good plastic boot for lighter ski tourers.
At the smaller end of the size range, we have 2 pairs of new Garmont Veloce boots sizes 23.5 and 24.5 and a pair of Scarpa boots size 25.
At the larger end, we have 6 pairs of Garmont Excursions which cover sizes 26.5, 27, 27.5, 28, 29, 30. New this year we’ve extended up to size 32 with a pair of T2 Scarpa boots. And we have a pair of Crispi CXT 30 which is 10.5/11: whilst these are slightly stiffer and higher to cope with the extra weight, they are still the ideal boot for the kind of skiing we generally do.
For Alpine touring, we have 3 pairs of Garmont G-lite boots in sizes 26, 28 and 30, two pairs of Raichle Concordia boots at UK sizes 7 and 8 (although experience suggests to take these as half a size or more smaller) and a pair of Rossignol Carve at 25.5.
The club has 9 sets of adjustable poles and a couple of pairs of one piece poles. Most walking poles can be equipped with plastic baskets, so if you have adjustable walking poles you may just want to use these.
These are also available to
hire.
We have three digital transceivers for hire, an Orthovox M2 and two DTSes which work on the standard international search frequency of 457kHz.
Weekend charges are based on days skied - for days not skied, the hire fee is waived but £2 donation is requested for each week any ski equipment is retained by the hirer. Where skis are hired by the week for holidays abroad, we would expect members to pay for the week's hire and claim on their insurance in the event of no snow or other events preventing skiing.

These charges are a considerable discount on rates available at hire shops in Scotland or resorts in Europe and America. A deposit cheque for £20 made payable to ESTC is required. This will be returned or torn up when equipment is returned. Note: if equipment is returned late and a subsequent person is forced to hire elsewhere, the deposit will not be returned.
We are happy to hire to people who are not currently members of Edinburgh Ski Touring Club. However we do need to ask non-members for the following at the time of picking up the equipment:
Hire costs for non-members: add 25% to the costs in the above table.
Note for those who have recently applied for membership: Unless your name is on the most recently circulated membership list then the onus is on you to show current proof of membership at the garage (i.e. a current membership card), and if you don’t have this then you will have to provide the above as per non-members. Be aware that it can take some time for the membership secretary to process your membership (ski holidays sometimes get in the way!), so apply in good time if you want to hire with the benefits of being a member.
