We have good quality skis and boots available for hire at very reasonable
prices. Almost all of our equipment has been bought within the last 5 years, and covers everything from on-piste skiing to all types of touring and a small amount of ski mountaineering kit. All proceeds from hire go towards topping up our stock each year. An updated equipment list and hire prices for the 2008-09 season will be available when we're nearer snow time!
Helen Stocks will handle bookings for Winter 2008-09. Contact her on skihire@estc.org.uk. The pick-up and return time is usually Wednesday evenings, and MUST be pre-booked with Helen.
There
are five pairs of new Atomic Sierra skis. In 190, 180 and 170
lengths. These skis are modern touring skis with a reasonable
degree of waist to promote touring. The sidecut, or waist on
these skis, helps to promote turning when edged and helps control
on the downhill slopes. They are the ideal skis for beginners.
They have fishscale bottoms, which means there is no need to
explore the arcane mysteries of waxing until later. They have
Rottafella cable bindings which provide greater rigidity that
traditional three pin bindings and are extremely user friendly.
They are perfect for most touring in Scotland and Norway.
In addition there is two new pairs of Karhu traditional nordic touring skis with fishscale bottoms. These are 180 and 190 in length. These skis are perfect for ski touring in rolling country where you want to cover greater distances on flat or rolling terrain. With slightly less sidecut than the Sierras these skis are perfect for kicking and gliding.
Ski lengths have come down with the new designs and 170s should
be perfect for people under 140lbs or 65Kilogrammes.
We have also bought some Head downhill 170 skis with 7 TM
bindings and been given some similar 160 Rossignol
skis which have suitable bindings for piste and off piste work.
These are what are recommended by the telemark instructors.
They are suitable for all but the club giants. We have two
new sets of Atomic MX skis for telemark and backcountry touring.
The club has managed to acquire 12 sets of plastic boots. Six pairs are Garmont Telesaurus Boots in sizes ,25.5,26 and 26.5. These cover sizes 38-40 or 5-7+ in other common measurement systems. They are relatively soft and low cut and are the perfect plastic boot for lighter ski tourers. They are based on children's feet neither men nor women and should be a perfect match for the skis. The remaining pairs are Garmont Excursion and run 26.5, 27 , 28, 29, 30 An we have a pair of Crispi CXT 30 which is 10.5/11. These are slightly stiffer and higher to cope with the extra weight. it is still, however, the ideal boot for ESTC style activities. Hopefully we can cope with most people within this range.
We
also have some good leather boots suitable for use with touring
skis in 40-43. Club boots are adequate for downhill telemarking
with the skis we have. If you become a dedicated downhill telemarker
youmay want stiffer higher telemark boots, but you will pay
a price in comfort for other uses.
The club has 6 sets of adjustable poles and a variety of one
piece poles with nordic and plastic baskets. Most walking poles
can be equipped with plastic baskets, so if you have adjustable
walking poles this is probably the best way to go. Three piece
walking poles are probably the first bit of kit to buy for
yourself as they can be adjusted for walking, downhill
telemarking and cross country touring.
These are also available to hire
We have three digital transceiver for hires. An Orthovox M 2and two DTS which work on the standard international search frequency of 457kHz.
Crampons, ski crampons for 7TM Tours, climbing harnesses and
an assortment of karabiners, are also available. Ask if you
don't see it listed
Weekend charges are based on days skied - for days not skied fee is waived but £2 donation is requested for each week any ski equipment is retained by hirer. Where skis are hired by the week for holidays we would expect members to pay for the week's hire and claim on their insurance in the event of no snow or other events preventing skiing.

These charges are a considerable discount to rates available at the Scottish hire shops, or, resort prices in Europe and America. A deposit cheque for £20, made payable to ESTC, is required. This will be returned or torn up when equipment is returned. Note: if equipment is returned late and a subsequent person is forced to hire elsewhere, the deposit will not be returned.
