Cycling

ETSC shares many members and many interests with Spokes - the Lothian Cycle Campaign (a non party political voluntary organisation, founded in 1977, with a membership of over 1000). SPOKES campaigns (effectively) for better conditions for cyclists, especially in Edinburgh and the Lothians. In the summer there are a number of weekend runs that are shared by the two organisations and use the cycleways and back routes in the Lothians and the Borders, and in Fife.

After changes in the policy on bikes on trains made it difficult for groups of cyclists to travel in this way, Harry set up his Bike Bus and this was used for many weekend trips until the end of the 2004 season. The bereft cyclists formed a new group called Mellow Velo that organises weekend and day cycle trips from March until November.  Although Mellow Velo is separate from SPOKES, (differing transport policies make them incompatible) many of its members are strong supporters. Mellow Velo meets are organised along similar lines to ESTC ones reflecting the strong overlap of membership. The website is at www.mellowvelo.org.uk.

A number of members are also into mountain biking and, if the snow is poor on winter weekends, some members will make mountain bike trips instead. Cycling is an extremely effective way of maintaining fitness for ski touring as well as a relaxed way to explore the byways of Scotland.

The Scottish Cycling Development Project works to further the development of cycling, in pursuance of its aims, which are as follows: To raise the profile of cycling in Scotland, by encouraging bike use as an attractive and acceptable lifestyle option. Working with relevant organisations, the Project aims to promote throughout Scotland the health, environmental and practical benefits of cycling to all. It acts as a focus to achieve a significant increase in bike use, by providing advice and information, by promoting events to excite media interest, and by seeking to improve facilities for cycling. This is a predominantly west coast initiative.

This is where you will find the cycle routes that VisitScotland have developed as part of their major initiative to promote tourism.

Sustrans - the sustainable transport charity - works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects. Sustrans' flagship project is the National Cycle Network, creating 10,000 miles of routes throughout the UK. Sustrans has an office on Fountainbidge in Edinburgh.
